General polyphonic developments (jan 1, 1400 – jan 1, 1600)
Description:
A new counterpoint developed that promoted 3rds and 6ths while avoiding parallel 5ths and 8ths. A focus began to be given to making each part smooth and gratifying to sing. The motet was also redefined from a piece that added text to the upper discant part to almost any polyphonic composition on a latin text (usually sacred or ceremonial).
