Philippe de Vitry (jan 1, 1291 – jan 1, 1361)
Description:
He was a frenchman of instrumental importance to the Ars Nova. Vitry was definitely a canon of the collegiate church of Notre Dame in Clermont-en-Beauvais by 1322, most likely courtesy of the patronage of Louis de Bourbon, the Count of Clermont. Vitry served Louis in numerous ways for at least twenty years until his death in 1342, after which he served in various positions in the royal French administration. With royal backing, Vitry was appointed Bishop of Meaux in 1351, holding this post until his death. There is much debate surrounding some of his supposed compositions because they are not explicitly stated to be authored by him. This is a common problem, as most compositions from the 14th century are anonymous (minus the exception of Machaut).
