- Being an actress, songwriter, singer and comedian (started in 1934)
- Being the first African American actor to win an Oscar ( February 29, 1940)
- Won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (also February 29, 1940)
- Was denied her final wish - to be buried in Hollywood Cemetery, because it was restricted to whites (October 26, 1952)
- Also was unable to perform some places, because it was whites only, for example when she played “Mammy” in “Gone with the wind”. (December 15, 1939)
