Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan (jan 2, 1979 – jan 1, 1989)

Description:

The Soviets intervened in the Afghan war to support the Communist government that was in place, and sent in troops to stop the Muslim guerillas attempting to overthrow the government. The United States also came in to aid the guerillas, and it led to a stalemate where Soviet troops held cities while the guerillas held the countryside. The USSR eventually failed to defeat the uprising, and signed an accord with America, Pakistan and Afghanistant to remove their troops.
