Bartolomeu Dias was from Portugal. He was the first european mariner to ever go around the tip of Africa, which opened a sea route from Europe to Asia. The voyage he took went around the Cape of Good Hope, which was considered really dangerous, then to Africa's southernmost point, then to the Indian Ocean.
