Am. Civil War (jan 1, 1861 – jan 1, 1865)

Description:

Fought over a dispute regarding slavery.

- Abraham Lincoln, republican, elected President (1860 - 1865). He is strongly opposed to slavery.
- Southern states secede and create Confederate States in protest of Lincoln and launch an attack (1861)
- With General Lee and many prominent officers on their side, the Confederates score initial victories, but the war drags on and motivation dwindles.
- The already more populous Northern Yankee states open the land for sale to more European colonisers, drafting them into the army on arrival (Homestead Act, 1862). They also have an industrial advantage.
- The Confederates are smashed in the battle of Gettysburg (1863).
- The Yankees begin total war, destroying everything in their way; civilians are suffering.
- The Confederate States surrender (1865)
- The 13th Amendment to the Constitution, issued by Lincoln, abolishes slavery across the US.

Racial segregation ensues.
