Girolamo Savonarola was an Italian preacher who was raised from a young age to have very good religious morals. Later into his life he became disgusted with the corruption of the church and tyranny of ruling families in Florence. In 1494 he even overthrew the Medici, one of the most powerful European families, and established a democratic republic in Florence. There were many attempts by Pope Alexander and the Medici family to put restrictions on him, but all of them were ignored.
