Decline of Logging in Northern Wisconsin (jan 1, 1900 – dec 1, 1940)

Description:

At the start of the 20th century it was uncertain of the lumber industry fate. The old methods had cut usable and profitable timber, but the new methods had cleared so much of the usable trees not leaving much. Furniture, paper, and leather industries required way more lumber than what was being provided and what was being grown. Since lumbering mostly wanted pine trees they tried to go to hardwoods but failed. As logging was dying down, industries tried to sell their land to people who would stay in that region. Those people could start farming there with all the stumps. That had very little success so the logging era declined.
