Start of Logging in Wisconsin (jan 1, 1800 – dec 1, 1836)

Description:

Around the late 19th century, Wisconsin was one of the number one lumber producing states. It was not as popular to the state when settlers first started coming in. The lumber industry started to peak after the Menominee Nation was forced to cede much of central and eastern Wisconsin in 1836. Lumbering was not an easy thing to do. There was many obstacles like long distances between supplies and markets, bad transportation, and dangerous waterways and roads. Even with all those the lumber industry became the backbone of the state’s economy. Rivers were a great source for transporting lumber from the forests to the mills.
