Growth of Lead Mining (jan 1, 1760 – dec 1, 1840)

Description:

Much of the miners that came to Wisconsin came from Missouri which had a similar lead boom a fews years back. Communities started up by mines and so did industries to help provide for the people working in the mines. In the 1830s, more experience miners from Cornwall in southwestern England began arriving. They mainly settled in Mineral Point. They built small limestone houses like the ones back in England. By 1829 there was more than 4,000 miners that worked in Southwestern Wisconsin. They mined about 13 million pounds of lead each year.
