Women in the Civil War (apr 12, 1861 – dec 1, 1870)
Description:
While the men were in the war fighting, the women were home having to do all the things that the men did. Women were expected to support the med spiritually, medically, and economically. Middle and upper class women formed organizations to aid societies throughout Wisconsin. This was called The Woman’s Soldiers Aid Society. This sent in medical inspectors to help improve the army hospitals. There was also hired nurses and thousands of dollars worth of supplies that went to the army hospitals. Some women pretended to be men so they could fight along their loved ones or brothers. Other women would help out and do many of the jobs that men used to do. By 1860 to 1870 the number women involved in Wisconsin’s industry began to increase by over 500 percent.
