Jefferson Presidency (mar 4, 1801 – mar 4, 1809)

Description:

Date: March 4 1801- March 4 1809

Jefferson was sworn into office on March 4, 1801; his was the first in Washington, D.C. One of his first significant achievements of his administration was the Louisiana Purchase, which he sent Lewis and Clark on, and it lasted from 1804-1806. He ran for re-election in 1804 where he defeated Federalist candidate Charles Pinckney with over 70 percent of the popular vote. During his second term, he focused on keeping America out of Britain's Napoleonic Wars, but once they (and France) attacked American merchant ships, he implemented the Embargo Act of 1807. He did not run for a third term and was succeeded by James Madison in 1808.
