Although war was not officially declared until 1756, armed conflict began in 1754 when there disputes over land claims in the Ohio River Valley. These disputes led to frontier battles between the French and the British. By the end of the war in 1763, the French were defeated, and even though the British and their Native American allies won, the French were the only ones to realize that this was just the beginning of the American story.
