Christopher Columbus made four trips across the atlantic. 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502. He wanted to find a new trade route from europe to asia from the east. But instead of Asia he landed in the americas. He was not the first to discover the americas, but this discovery did start exploitation and colonization of the americas. In 1492 columbus took three ships; Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. He sailed from island to island, looking for treasures; gold, silver and pearls, also he left some men behind on Hispaniola in makeshift settlement when he returned to spain.
