Democritus' Atomic Model (jan 1, 400 BC – dec 31, 400 BC)
Description:
Democritus, a Greek Philosopher, is commonly recognized as the first person to propose the concept of atoms. Democritus believed that atoms were the smallest unit of matter; he thought that if you took matter and kept dividing it, you'd eventually reach an atom, which he believed to be indivisible. He thought atoms were solid, homogenous, indestructible pieces of matter with empty space in between them. He also believed that the physical properties of atoms, such as their mass and size, differed depending on the substance of the object they made up. Finally, he believed that atoms were always moving in the empty space that surrounded them and that collisions between the atoms were responsible for changes is matter.
