Charlottesville Protest (aug 11, 2017 – aug 12, 2017)

Description:

The Charlottesville Protest began due to a far-right rally of white supremacists, neo-nazis, and other white nationalist groups in opposition to the planned removal of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's statue from Emancipation Park in Charlottesville, Virginia. These alt-right groups chanted anti-semitic and racist sayings. In response to this rally, Anti-fascist counter protesters congregated to show their distain for the alt-right groups. Tension between the opposing groups escalated, until violence broke out. The most notable moment of violence was when a white nationalist drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one woman. By the end of the day, three people were killed. This is significant because it demonstrates that the ideologies from the antebellum era have not completely disappeared.
