In 2016, NFL Quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem in protest of racial violence and oppression towards black Americans. Many league executives and future president Donald Trump condemned his actions, calling them disrespectful towards the flag and those who fight in the armed forces. Trump even went as far as calling all those who partake in the kneeling protest "sons of bitches". Nevertheless, the non-violent kneeling movement exploded, with team after team participating in the protest against police violence, racial inequality, and legal injustice for blacks.Added to timeline:
