The Black Lives Matter movement is led by an organization whose goal is to affirm that black people and their contributions to society are important and to protect black communities against violence and oppression. It started as a hashtag on Twitter (#BlackLivesMatter) in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman after he killed Trayvon Martin.
