New Imperialism (jan 1, 1870 – jan 1, 1914)
Description:
New Imperialism was a period when European countries pushed to expand territorial control over Africa and Asia. After the industrial revolution, European countries wanted to obtain resources and labor from Asia and Africa through trade because it was cheaper to have resources and products made and shipped in Asia and Africa. During the age of new imperialism, the Chinese had disagreements with the British about trade in their country. This lead to the signing of the treaty of Nanjing which gave the British Hong Kong. European countries also colonized Africa in order to obtain raw materials to fuel their industrialization. However, this proved difficult due to the diseases that devastated the Europeans and the African people. Technology such as the steam boat and guns helped Europe to colonize Africa.
