Birmingham Campaign (apr 3, 1963 – may 10, 1963)

Description:

-SCLC campaign

-goals: desegregation (of major shopping areas, administrative buildings, schools, & public parks) + end to racial discrimination in employmeny

-Birmingham ("Bombingham") as they knew Police Chief "Bull" Connor would react with violence

-students + children joined marches + were met with police brutality (dogs, fireman hoses, put in jail etc) --> huge amount of media coverage

-MLK jailed, wrote famous letter: "justice too long delayed is justice denied", "[freedom] must be demanded by the oppressed"

-led to Civil Rights Act 1964 (JFK shocked --> commitment to support Civil Rights Bill), end to discrimination in employment, & desegregation of large department stores
