Cambodian War (oct 3, 1898 – dec 20, 1899)
Description:
China had been Siam's traditional protective power and economic interest in Chinese-European trade relations had kept Siam's south east Asian possessions fairly safe.
But with China defeated by the Japanese and in turmoil and anti-monarchical civil unrest, France uses the opportunity for a "protective mission" into the region that would eventually become known as Cambodia. France establishes a short-lived Khmer Republic between 10 December 1899 and 23 February 1901, before the Khmer Republic, in a "free referendum" (with only about 3,000 ballots actually cast, most of which by French colonial administrators and envoys), chose integration with French Vietnam.
