In 1939, Adolf Hitler invaded Poland from the west. The French declared war on Germany just two days after that, thus beginning the second world war. Taking place between 1939 and 1945, almost every part of the world. There were the Axis Powers, Germany, Italy, and Japan, and the Allies; France, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, the United States, and (to a lesser extent), China.
