Description:

Gertrude Elion was an American biochemist that aided in developing drugs to treat leukemia, prevent kidney transplant rejection, and herpes. In 1944 is where she first began a working partnership with Dr. George H. Hitchings at Burroughs Wellcome Company. Elion and Hitchings worked together approximately 40 years publishing research on the differences in biochemistry between normal cells and pathogens to produce different drugs, also called rational drug design method. Elion and her team produced drugs to treat leukemia, herpes, and aids. Along with treatments to lower the risk of rejection from kidney transplant patients. In 1988 she topped off her career winning a Nobel Prize in medicine. Gertrude Elion was a pioneer in her field and can be thanked for her many accomplishments.
