Edgard Varèse 1. Varèse, an innovative composer in the United States in the 1920s, worked toward the “liberation of sound.” 2. His first American work, Amériques, was on the scale of the Rite of Spring. He attempted (unsuccessfully) to blend neoprimitivsm and futurism. 3. His Ionisation uses thirteen percussion players.
The New Technology Spreads 1. “Computer music” got started in the United States in 1957. 2. The composers associated with computer music were in the universities, notably Columbia and Princeton. 3. Varèse began composing his last large work, Déserts, in 1949. 4. His Poème électronique, for tape alone, premiered at the World’s Fair in 1958. 5. Cage did not attach himself to any particular academic institution but did compose electronic music.
