Description:
a Russian pianist, composer and conductor who became a pivotal figure in Russian culture when he founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory.
Balakirev aligned with the more progressive ideas; Rubenstein held to a more conservative line. A piano virtuoso, Rubenstein sought to raise Russian music training to a more professional level by importing master teachers (paid for by aristocratic patrons).
