Weakness of the liberal Italy
- There was a lack of coherent Italian national identity after the unification
- Regionalism was strongest (industrialised north against agricultural south)
- State and Catholic Church at odds
- Government and decision making bodies ruled by the middle and upper classes
- Trade unions shut down and workers parties banned (Italian Socialist Party, PSI) to suppress growing lower class dissatisfaction
- Italian Nationalist Association formed 1910 from dissatisfaction Italy didn't become a "great power" after its unification
