Hong Kong Protests - March 2019 onwards (mar 15, 2019 – 22h 4min, sep 17, 2020 y)

Description:

The ongoing 2019–20 Hong Kong protests were triggered by the Hong Kong government's introduction of the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill. Had it been enacted, the bill would have allowed the extradition of wanted criminal suspects and criminal fugitives to territories with which Hong Kong does not currently have extradition agreements, including Mainland China and Taiwan. This led to concerns that the bill would subject Hong Kong residents and visitors to the jurisdiction and legal system of Mainland China, thereby undermining Hong Kong's autonomy and civil liberties, and infringe on freedom of speech laws. On September 8, Hong Kong police were largely criticized after a video of them tackling a 12-year-old went viral. The video shows the young girl walking along the street before being approached by police. When she tried to run, the police tackled her to the ground and began allegedly beating her with batons. The police force has defended the officers’ actions, sparking more outrage from protesters. (CNN)
