Guilio Caccini (jan 1, 1551 – jun 1, 1618)
Description:
an Italian composer, teacher, singer, instrumentalist and writer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras. He was one of the founders of the genre of opera, and one of the most influential creators of the new Baroque style. He wrote Le Nuove Musiche in 1602.He is the father of Francesca Caccini, who was the first female composer to write an opera: La Liberazione de Ruggiero.
Some of his pieces are examples of intermedii.
Favola in Musica
A. The style of music developed by Caccini soon found its way to the theater.
1. Several early songs in this style existed in intermedii.
a. The Fabula di Orfeo served as the base story for numerous early musical plays.
b. None of these survive intact, only fragments.
2. The first true opera, La Dafne by Peri and Rinuccini, does not survive.
B. Gagliano called this genre favola in musica (musical tale), which is synonymous with "opera."
