Operation Desert Storm (jan 17, 1991 – feb 28, 1991)

Description:

Operation desert storm was the code name for the First Gulf War (the war to liberate Kuwait)

WHY DID THE COALITION FORCES DEFEAT THE IRAQI ARMY?
MILITARY POWER OF THE US:
-Most of the coalition was American and the US was the most powerful country in the world. They had the best military equipment, far better than the Iraqi's weapons.
-The president (Bush) was also able to convince the Kurds and Shia Iraqis to resist Saddam Hussein.

WEAK IRAQI ARMY:
-The Iraqi army was predominantly made up of conscripts who did not want to fight, whereas the coalition forces had much more motivation.
-The Iraqi soldiers had very poor training and weapons.

STRONG FORCES:
-The coalition forces had a strong air force to bomb Iraqi targets
-The air force worked with the ground forces to take out tanks.

It only took 4 days to drive most Iraqis out of Kuwait. Approximately 90 000 Iraqi troops died but less than 400 of the coalition had died.
However, there were many civilian deaths such as in Baghdad .
