Treatment Era (may 1, 1945 – mar 1, 1967)
Description:
The Treatment Era focused on reformation and viewed inmates as people who were sick that needed therapy and medical treatment. The mentally ill were placed in mental institutions that were very controversial due to extreme treatment methods such as lobotomy. Lobotomy was the severing of prefrontal connections in the brain to "treat" mental disorders leaving the patient intellectually and emotionally blunted.
