Industrial Era (aug 1, 1890 – jun 1, 1935)
Description:
The Industrial Era worked toward the goal of combatting increasing costs of disciplinary measures in prison. The industrial Era introduced inmate labor that creates a self sustaining system of running prisons. This Era came to an end with the Ashurst Sumners Act which restricted interstate commerce in prison made goods. Chain gangs and labor in prison were supported by prejudice and racial injustices and made the industrial Era a failure.
