The son of a middle-class lawyer—who turned into additionally a journalist and neighborhood political figure—and of a mom belonging to the same social background, Montini became in his early years educated especially at home due to frail health. In the beginning of November 1954, Pope Pius XII appointed him archbishop of Milan, and Pope John XXIII named him a cardinal in 1958. He turned into elected pope on June 21, 1963, selecting to be called Paul VI.
