Nehemiah ben Hushiel's autonomy (jan 1, 614 – jan 1, 617)
Description:
During a war between the Sassanid Persian Empire and the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire, the Jewish population in the Land of Israel rebelled against Byzantine Christian rule and in support of the Sassanids.
The Sassanids then made the charismatic mystical figure Nehemiah ben Hushiel governor in Jerusalem. Nehemiah began offering sacrifices on the site of the Second Temple, and began promoting the foundation of an independent Jewish state, possibly seeing himself as the Messiah. The Jewish authorities also attacked and oppressed the local Christian population.
Nehemiah's ambitions for independence led the Sassanids to depose him and give power to the local Christians, and soon after the Byzantine Empire reconquered the region.
