Nasi (jan 1, 170 BC – jan 1, 425)
Description:
The Nasi was the leader of the Sanhedrin, the Rabbinic Jewish supreme court, and thus had significant authority to enforce laws as well as being a respected legal authority.
Under the Roman Empire (after the fall of the Herodians), the Nasi was recognized as the leader of the Jewish community in the Land of Israel and was given free reign to enforce Jewish laws and to tax the Jewish population.
The office of the Nasi was briefly discontinued during the unrest surrounding the Bar Kochba revolt, but was later restored and given even more prestige and respect by the Romans. The position of Nasi was eventually ended during the Christianization of the Roman Empire, leading to a further decline in the Jewish population of the Land of Israel.
