After King Solomon's death, ten of the Jewish tribes split off from the other two to found their own state. The remaining two tribes based around the city of Jerusalem became the Kingdom of Judah, ruled by descendants of King David. This kingdom continued to promote sacrifices at the Temple in Jerusalem. Many of the prophets of the Tanakh were active in the Kingdom of Judah. This Kingdom was destroyed by the Babylonian Empire, which began the Babylonian Exile.
