Hasmoneans (jan 1, 164 BC – jan 1, 63 BC)

Description:

Following the revolt of Maccabees, the Maccabee leadership made themselves the High Priests in the Temple and formed an independent kingdom based in Jerusalem, which gradually conquered the entire Land of Israel and forcibly converted some populations to Judaism.

This Hasmonean dynasty of priest-kings included many tyrants, but also some rulers like Queen Shlom-Tsion who are looked upon favorably by Jewish history.

A dynastic dispute gave the opportunity for the Roman Republic to intervene, bringing an end to the Hasmonean kingdom.

Important figures: Judah Maccabee, Alexander Yannai, Shlom-Tsion
