Zugot (jan 1, 170 BC – jan 1, 10)
Description:
The Zugot were rabbinic leaders of the Jewish community in the Land of Israel who served in pairs after the Great Assembly ceased to function. They transmitted and taught the Oral Torah, and are sometimes quoted in the Mishna. One of each pair of Zugot served as the Nasi.
Important figures: Hillel and Shammai.
