Balkan "Powder Keg"
October 6, 1908 - June 27, 1914 (oct 5, 1908 – jun 27, 1914)
Description:
Significance: The Balkans caused continuous conflicts that led to the creation of many alliances, created rivalries between nations, and led to an increase in nationalism. The most important conflict includes Serbia trying to unite all the Slavic people when Austria-Hungary suddenly annexes Bosnia, a country with a large Slavic population, which causes a lot of tension between the two nations. These tensions that were created and increased between nations made it possible for one event, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, to start a conflict that would become a world war.
