Federalist candidate John Adams defeated in reelection bid.
Democrat-Republicans Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe each elected two terms in succession (sometimes referred to as Jeffersonians).
This new party was popular in the South; tried to appeal to everyone and was torn apart because of this.
