The Mass (Congregate) Prison Era (jan 2, 1825 – jan 1, 1876)
Description:
Early states such as Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland, and New York built prisons based off of Pensylvania's correctional system. But, because solitary confinement was more expensive, they developed the Auburn system of imprisonment. This focused on group workshops rather than solitary activities.
