The Just Deserts Era (jan 3, 1995 – jan 1, 2020)
Description:
The negative effects of the Warehousing Era and prison overcrowding renewed the emphasis on individual responsibility of the offender. This philosophy is based on retribution, incapacitation, and deterrence. This has become the operational principle of many of today's correctional institutions.
This era returns to the original purpose of incarceration, imprisonment. This has led to an increase of prison facilities and an increase in offenders.
However, people worry that the increase in populations and decrease in privledges of inmates will cause riots, more prison violence, inmate suicides, and other forms of prison disorder.
Also, in 1995, Alabama reinstituted the use of chain gangs, but was later filed a lawsuit then stopped the use.
