The Industrial Era (jun 19, 1892 – jan 1, 1935)
Description:
Inmate populations and the costs of operations began to increase. States began to look at inmate labor, this supported the philosophy of incarcitation and restoration. They smelted steel, made cabinets, molded tires, and produced many other goods. This era was popular in the south due to the loss of slaves during the Civil War. However, the Ashurst-Sumners act in 1935 ended the industrial era.
