The Reformatory Era (jan 2, 1876 – jan 1, 1890)
Description:
There was tension between the philosophies of the Pensylvania and Auburn systems that led to this era. This was based on indeterminate sentences in the hopes of rehabilitation of offenders. Captain Alexander Macanochie and Sir Walter Crofton are credited with the making of this era. However, the reformatory era proved to be a failure.Added to timeline:
