Wars of Religion (jan 1, 1572 – jan 1, 1598)

Description:

France experienced 8 religious wars between Catholics and Protestants (calvinist Huguenots)

On St. Bartholomew's Day in 1572 a massacre of Huguenots took place during the wedding of Henry Bourbon (future king Henry IV).

A milestone in Catholic-Protestant relations in France was the Edict of Nantes issued by Henry VI in 1598, which vested Huguenots freedom of religion outside of Paris.
