The Directory (nov 2, 1795 – nov 9, 1799)
Description:
The Directory was the French Revolutionary government set up by the National Convention, who approved of the new ¨Constitution of the Year III.¨ The Directory consisted of five directors chosen from among the legislative assembly. It lasted for four years; however, its rule was weak and corrupt. Groups such as the Royalists and the Radicals plotted against the Directory, and eventually was overthrown in a coup d´état by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1799. This was important because Napoleon ended up rising to power by destroying the constitutional monarchy, and ultimately returning the revolution to an absolute monarchy.
