Description:
Mikhail Gorbachev becomes General Secretary of the Soviet Union and introduces glasnost and perestroika. Glasnost was a policy of freedom of speech, while perestroika stood for reforming the Soviet system. During this time period the economy was struggling due to very high funding for the military after previously invading Afghanistan.
