Manchurian invasion (sep 19, 1931 – feb 27, 1932)

Description:

After Mukden incident:
- Kwantung invaded Manchuria and created a puppet state called Manchukuo

- Relations between Britain and US deteriorated
- The international condemnation caused Japan to leave the League of Nations

- The League and the West were seen with mistrust because of the international condemnation.
- Perceived the West as acting out of racist, selfish, and (selfish) imperialistic views
- Seen as holding back Japan's needs

League response:
- League appealed to by GMD

- Japanese government cooperated with the League but the army continued expansion

- Sent investigative commission, reported back with the suggestion the diplomatic relations between each country be improved

- Little done to enforce League decision by member states due to their interests not being threatened and effects of Great Depression
- Japan also seen as able to contain Soviet expansion in the East

- Japan leaves League of Nations in 1933

People's Republic of China:

- China took no opposing military or legal action accept appealing to the League of Nations

- GMD's attention instead focused on eliminating the CCP
