Civil war between CCP and PRC (sep 1, 1945 – jan 1, 1949)
Description:
Reasons for CCP victory:
- Mao appointed competent leaders such as Lin Biao as head of the Red Army, whom he did not interfere with
- The Red Army was trained and renamed the People's Liberation Army (PLA)
- The CCP and PLA's good treatment of citizens according to the Three Rules and Eight Points of Behaviour made the people favour the CCP
- The continuing land reforms, literacy, and medical transformations increased peasant support
Reasons for GMD defeat:
- NRA had a large number of soldiers but they weren't as trained as the PLA
- Morale was low after fighting the Japanese. Many deserted to join the PLA
- GMD's support came from businessmen and landlords, unlike the larger body of peasants
- There were internal devisions which opposed Chiang Kai-shek
- Chiang Kai-shek chose officials and officers not based on their skill but their loyalty
- Hyperinflation could not be controlled by the GMD which made them unpopular
- Controlled their land via intimidation and not diplomacy like the CCP
