Beer Hall Putsch (nov 8, 1923 – nov 9, 1923)

Description:

Shortly after he helped form the Nazi Party, Adolf Hitler came up with a plan in which the Nazis would begin a revolution against a failing Weimar Republic. The plan was to force three leading Bavarian politicians - Otto von Lossow, Hans Ritter von Seisser and Gustav von Kahr - to join the Nazis. They would then march on Munich, and then Berlin. Hitler's plan was originally set for the tenth of November, but was changed because the opportunity arose to coerce all three men at once during a speech from Kahr at the Bürgerbräukeller. The putsch started well for the Nazis, but originally the three men did not want to join them even if they were shot if they didn't. After a "magical" speech from Hitler and some more persuasion from himself and Erich Ludendorff, they narrowly agreed to join them. Hitler then made a crucial mistake, and left the Beer Hall to attend to other matters. When he returned, the three men were gone. Hitler knew he was likely to fail, but nevertheless, his march on Munich continued. They were eventually stopped by police forces and Hitler was arrested for a minimum sentence of five years, of which he only served nine months. He spent his time in prison writing his autobiography, 'Mein Kampf' (My Fight/Struggle). This event was later referenced as a stepping stone to Hitler's promotion to chancellor as it made him muchmore popular.
