The Murder of James Scobie and The Starting of the Stockade (oct 7, 1854 – nov 30, 1854)

Description:

On the 7th of October 1854, James Scobie was murdered at Bentley's Eureka Hotel. James Bentley, William Hance and Thomas Farrell murdered James Scobie and they got arrested. But then in the police court James Bentley was friends with the Judge and so because of that he and the others were discharged. The reason this event is so important in History is because the miners felt that the situation was very unfair and because of this event, Australia went down a path that concluded democracy .On the 30th of November 1854, the Ballarat miners that were dissatisfied and angry with the government as they were treated unfairly, swore loyalty to the Southern Cross flag and built a stockade. Peter Lalor was the leader of all the miners.
